Hypervisor returns?

Trying my hand at a gaming hypervisor yet again.
Instead of using Xen I’m going to see how Hyper-V from Microsoft fairs using RemoteFX and vGPU.

No longer having Outlook handle email

Well, Microsoft has decided to discontinue free email hosting that uses Outlook.com as the backend.
I honestly don’t blame them. It sucks up a lot of traffic and unless someone is using the web GUI no ads or other types of revenue can really be generated.

So I’m moving back to my web host to handle my email. Which may be for the best anyway. Outlook.com was constantly blocking the email address I gave to my server for reporting, due to “spam like behavior”, oh well.

Server OS change

As much as I love and would prefer to keep using OpenMediaVault and Linux as my OS/Distro of choice, I must sadly migrate away.

I don’t like having to work off old code and while the plug in manager for OMV is great and the web GUI is top notch and simple; the time between updates is too large. The core OS is using, by today’s standards, an ancient kernel.

So it is with a sigh I migrate off of OMV and move to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.

XP has officially retired

So the day many have both dreaded and dreamed of (count me in the latter), has arrived.

As of today, Windows XP is out of support, no more updates, no more security fixes.

It was great in its day, but must concede to newer OS’s that can take advantage of today’s hardware and be more secure by design.

It was a good ride, but like other OS’s before it, it must end (*sniff* I still miss 98SE)

New server

Been rocking a new server built out of spare parts for a few weeks.

Using OpenMediaVault as my Linux Distro of choice.

Has Plex Media Server, basic file sharing, installed CrashPlan for backup, FTP, web server, and it runs on Debian. All sorts of nice stuff.

PC Gamers, their own worst enemy?

With recent posts from the SimCity team regarding offline mode and why cities can’t be larger it got me thinking.

Why does such a limitation exist in this day and age?

After only a few minutes of thinking back I answered my question: your average PC gamer isn’t power hungry for more GHz or RAM like they used to be.
How do I know this? I used to service those types of people. Read More

Hypervisor, revisited

I scrapped my plans for a hypervisor a while ago when I found my original graphics card and new gfx card BOTH do not support FLReset.
Essentially it lets the hypervisor reboot my gfx card and give it to one of the virtual machines.

Without that, I can’t make a gaming hypervisor.

But now I’ve got another idea… Read More

So long WinAmp, it was good

UPDATE: Apparently it may be sold off, not sure how I feel about that…

So Dec. 20th is the day AOL is shutting off WinAmp.com and discontinuing official downloads.

I remember when MP3s were brand new on the scene.
No good players for miles, the ones that popped up would quickly bloat or disappear.

But then WinAmp hit the scene… Read More

Windows 8 hate

So Windows 8 is still out there, we’ve got 8.1 on the way with many new features (mostly techy/business oriented), and people are still raging on this interface.

I find it rather useful. But I welcome change and new things.
I use the Start Screen apps all the time for email notifications, calendar, Twitter, weather, etc.
Now I don’t need to jump to several sites for this information, I don’t need to open Outlook several times a day. It’s all right there when I start up my PC. Read More

Random thought: Growing up a gamer today

So while I was playing Minecraft yesterday, a player on the server and I were talking.
He asked me my age (30), and I asked his (14).
Without thinking I typed the following:
”Ah, you’re growing up in an interesting time in gaming!”.

At the time I don’t know exactly why I said it or what it meant.
After giving it some time today, I think I’ve got it. Read More
